My grandma planted the seeds in my soul,of staring down fear. She lived in San Francisco and in the 60's and 70's, that was not a very safe place to live ( still isn't). She was a widow and traveled by herself everywhere. One day when I was a little girl, we were walking down a very crowded street filled with hippies and beatniks ( yes they really existed, but they weren't always so filled with "love"and "peace" as they professed to be) she could tell I was frightened. I had heard so many stories from my parents who only wanted to protect me, that I couldn't even look up. I clung onto her for dear life. She stopped me right there on the side walk and taught me that I had nothing to fear. Then she showed me how to stand up straight, put a pleasant look on my face and look people right in the eye and to walk like you knew exactly where you were going. It's taken a lifetime of practice, and so many little fears to over come, but I have always been grateful to my grandma for taking the time to teach me, but more importantly show me, that the opposite of fear is faith...and confidence.--Sandy Cane
